Rising gas prices are nothing new. But the pinch at the pump is affecting ther parts of the automotive aftermarket, as shown in our 12th annual Consumer Attitude Study.

This year, more than half of respondents compared prices when shopping for their automotive parts needs. Whether they visited a store (68 percent), checked prices online (41 percent) or reviewed ads (30 percent), consumers definitely are paying more attention to prices than before. In fact, 66 percent of respondents say advertising influences their purchases.

In the wake of rising gas prices, 27 percent have maintained their driving, while 22 percent cut back by at least 20 percent. When gas prices hit $3 to $3.24 per gallon, 29 percent say they backed off driving.

Hybrids are gaining popularity, as 42 percent would consider replacing their current vehicle with one. But when contemplating alternative fuels, 36 percent don’t know if ethanol or biodiesel are available where they live.
