Will lead regulations weigh down the aftermarket?
January 1, 2009

We don't think of lead as the environmental threat that it once was, but the use of lead wheel weights is detrimental to society's water supply.

The sixth-generation Toyota Camry differs more from its predecessors than its predecessors did from their predecessors. That says something about Americans' tastes and automotive expectations, because Toyota has always designed its U.S. market products based heavily on U.S. market research.

OEM vehicle of the month: 2008 Audi TT - Following a tough act
March 1, 2008

Sometimes there's just no way to follow a tough act. That's the case with the new Audi TT. We really liked the previous generation TT, so when the new one came our way, direct comparisons were inevitable.

The last time I drove the R32 was the first time in a long time that I spoke with a police officer. This time I managed to avoid that conversation, mostly by virtue of the new transmission and exhaust system. Like its predecessor, this second-generation Volkswagen R32 is ridiculously easy to drive at extremely imprudent speeds. But the earlier model tends to attract unwanted attention because its two-stage exhaust system urges the driver to leave the stick-shift transmission in a lower gear to keep the revs up and the second exhaust passage open; all just to hear that distinctive VR6 howl. The new car howls too, but leaving its new DSG transmission in 'Drive' makes it easier to manage temptation.

The engine makes precious little torque at the bottom end, but wakes up above 3,200 rpm. Combined with superior handling, it drives like a sports car.

Knowing EGR codes helps regulate emissions
December 1, 2007

Here's why we need it, how the PCM checks it and why it helps reduce tailpipe gases.

Getting to the heart of an AAPEX visitor
November 2, 2007

Why do people go to AAPEX? There are many answers: to sell, to buy, to see what?s new, to see old friends and meet new people.

Unlock the secrets of electronic parking brakes
September 1, 2007

When parking a car, there are two ways to make it stay put: shift into park (or shift a manual transmission into gear) or set the parking brake. Ideally the driver will do both, but if everything is working properly, either one of these will do the job.

J2534: The passport to PCM programming
June 1, 2007

When car manufacturers started using computers to operate engines, software updates became part of a tech's job. At first, updates were accomplished by replacing a memory chip in the control unit or the control unit itself. But by the time on-board diagnostics two (OBDII) was introduced, most powertrain control modules (PCMs) could be reprogrammed.
